I know I do.
In 2010, I was in my last year of high school. I knew I was smart, and I always wanted to go and study abroad.
Because I was very ambitious, I applied to some of the top universities in Europe to study computer science there – Imperial College London and King’s College London.
I dreamed about going there, living the student lifestyle with endless dorm parties and getting a good degree that would let me get any job I wanted (yes, I was naive).
At first, everything went well. I wrote up the applications to the colleges, prepared a detailed CV, got my references… and eventually I got this e-mail:

At first, I was excited and I let my family and friends know about the good news.
There was one problem though – because I chose some of the top universities out there, I had to graduate with straight As – even in the subjects I wasn’t interested in, like Slovenian language and Philosophy.
Because of that, I started procrastinating. I said I would study for exams later. I started skipping school and played video games at home just to keep my mind off of studying.
As time went by, it became more and more clear that I wouldn’t be able to get accepted to my dream colleges.
I decided to give up on my goals.
The excuse that I used was that “I don’t want to be a financial burden to my parents and leave all my friends behind”.
But deep down inside, I knew that it was because I was afraid to give it my all and still fail. This would mean to me that I’m not as smart as I thought I was, and it would cost me months of studying.
I chose the easy way out – I kept avoiding studying and speaking to my friends and family about the subject.
And then, it got worse.
Because I avoided everything related to studying and skipped school, I didn’t even pass the last grade of high school. I couldn’t even take the graduation exams.
This meant that I had to repeat the same year of high school again, in a class of totally new people that saw me as a complete failure.
It was one of the worst years of my life, filled with guilt, regret, and the feeling that I’ve failed myself.
Top 3 reasons why we don’t we follow through with our goals and New Year Resolutions
Why do we set new goals each year, only to find them written down at the bottom of a drawer 6 months later?
Why don’t we follow through with them and simply take the easy way out by staying in our comfort zone and changing nothing?
Because we start doubting ourselves and finding excuses.
Reason #1 – “I’m just not the kind of person that would do that…”
What we say:
“I wish I could talk to strangers on the bus like my friend can, but I guess I’m just not the kind of person that could do that.”
The actual reasons:
You go out with your friend, and within 2 minutes, you see him in a deep conversation with a stranger on the bus that he’s never met before. How does he do that?
As you watch him, you think to yourself: “He’s such a natural. I wish I could do that.”.
We don’t take action because what we see in others seems so far away from us. Our friends tells amazing stories, has the courage to talk to any stranger, he lights up the room when he walks in and he always gets invited to the best parties.
That’s so many things that he’s doing better than you. How could you possibly learn all of that? How do you do it and where do you even start?
You don’t take action on your goals because you feel overwhelmed by all the choices out there and because you don’t know where to start if you wanted to improve your social skills.
What successful people do:
The people who successfully learn social skills break the skills down into smaller ones (telling stories, improving body language, approaching strangers…), and learn them one by one. Not all at once, just one at a time. They improve a little but little, and with time it adds up. And a few months later, you think they are naturals!
Reason #2 – “I just don’t have the time and energy to do that…”
What we say:
“I don’t have the time and energy to work on a side business. I have a job and two kids, and this takes up all of my time.”
The actual reasons:
Why do some people manage to create a successful side-business, even though they have a full time job and a family, while others don’t?
Do they just try harder or somehow have more energy?
No, they just spend less hours on watching TV, reading newspapers and mindlessly browsing through their Facebook feeds.
I bet you could find at least 30min of time a day to work towards your goal (that’s over 180 hours a year!) if you really wanted to.
But you don’t, because time is not the issue.
The real issue is that you are afraid.
- You are afraid that if your business fails, you will just spend 3 months working on it and that your friends will laugh at you.
- You are afraid that if you get some paying clients, you won’t be able to deliver on your promises.
- You are afraid that if your business succeeds, your friends won’t look at you in the same way any more.
What successful people do:
The people who successfully build their side-businesses know how how to overcome their fears. Instead of finding excuses to avoid admitting that they are afraid, they embrace the fact that every person is afraid of something and invest their energy into learning how to perform well in spite of the fears that come up.
Reason #3 – “I can always work on this later…”
What we say:
“I will work on losing weight some time in the future… The summer is still a long time away.”
The actual reasons:
You finally got the gym membership and went to the gym.
But once you came there, you realised that you had no idea what to do. You didn’t know how to do the exercises properly, and you were afraid to ask others for help.
You felt like you didn’t belong there. You felt like everyone was looking at you and wondering what this person is even doing here.
After that experience, you never went back to the gym again. You said to yourself that you can always go back later, but deep down you knew that you won’t because it feels weird and out of your comfort zone.
So what can you do to avoid this awkwardness and still still reach your goals?
What successful people do:
The people who successfully reach their goals know that it will feel weird when they first start out with something they’ve never done before. They also know that they will get stuck and won’t know how to do somethings.
They hire a personal trainer in the gym for an hour to show them how to do the basic exercises correctly and help them create their workout plan. They also surround themselves with other people who believe in hem and support them along the way, so they don’t feel like they are all alone in this journey.
How I overcame my fears and barriers and made 2014 the best year of my life
2014 was easily the best year of my life. And it wasn’t because I created a successful online business or spent 7 months travelling around the world.
It was because I finally managed to create a normal relationship with my family.
You see, just one year ago, my relationship with my family was more or less inexistent. My sister moved out of my parent’s place because she couldn’t stand me any more. Over the last 3 years, we spoke about once a year for 15 minutes to exchange pleasantries. For a few years, she didn’t even congratulate me for my birthday.
With my parents, things weren’t much better. We said hello to each other from time to time, but most of the time I just avoided talking to them.
I desperately wanted to change, but just couldn’t get myself to do it.
I wanted to change that. I’ve spent many nights in bed thinking about how much I wished I had a normal relationship with a family. I wanted to be able to show them how much I loved them, but I couldn’t get myself to take action.
All of that changed this year when I realised that I can systematically improve the relationships with my family just like I managed to create my businesses, improve my writing skills and got a six pack in the past.
At first, it was still incredibly hard. I had to actually get my girlfriend to write the first few e-mails to my parents and my sister for me. It was super embarrassing, but I just didn’t know what else to do. After the first few e-mails, everything became a ton easier though.
Now, my relationship with my family is 1000x better.
I managed to keep the conversations going and later on when I came back from travelling, I actually started grabbing coffee with my sister once a week. My relationship with my family got a lot better as well, and after many many years we even went on a one-week vacation together.

I took a one week vacation with my parents this year and it was amazing!

Having the ability to spend a nice lunch with my family, making eye contact with them and not arguing.
